The Perry County Central Commodores football team traveled to Lawrence County on Friday to take on the Bulldogs. The Commodores have gotten off to a slow start this season, dropping their first three games (by about a touchdown in each), and were in need of a win to get the season back on track.
The Lawrence County offense stayed on the ground early in the contest, giving them the early lead. The Bulldogs finished off the drive with a 14-yard run (7-0).
Perry Central came right back to tie the game. After a sustained drive, the Commodores finished with a five-yard run by Austin Pray. Dylan Wooton added the kick to tie the game at seven.
Just before the first period ended, the Bulldogs were able to get back in the end zone. This time with a 10-yard run (13-7).
The Commodores started the second period with a pair of touchdowns. The first came on a 62-yard run by Austin Pray, and the second a 69-yard pass to Darryl Beatty from Austin Pray (Pray hit Nathan Pray for the conversion), giving Perry Central the 21-13 advantage.
Lawrence County came back with a pair of touchdowns of their own. The Bulldogs then took the lead 27-21.
The two teams traded touchdowns just before the half. Perry Central scored on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Austin Pray to Tyler Fugate (Wooton added the extra point), giving them the 28-27 lead. The lead was short-lived as Lawrence County scored just before the half, and went into the break with the 35-28 lead.
The Bulldogs came out of the intermission and went back to work. Lawrence County scored a touchdown on a 25-yard run, extending their lead to 43-28.
Perry Central put together a long drive late in the period, and finished with a three-yard pass from Austin Pray to Robert McClain. Tyler Fugate caught the conversion, setting the score at 43-36.
Early in the fourth quarter, Lawrence County tried to put the game on ice. A touchdown gave them the 49-36 lead. The lead seemed to be more than the Commodores could overcome as it held to the 3:00 mark.
Perry Central exploded at that point, getting a 70-yard punt return from Austin Pray, and a 83-yard catch and run from Robert McClain. The McClain touchdown came with 3.4 seconds on the clock. Dylan Wooton added the extra point, giving Perry Central the 50-49 win.
