On Friday, the Perry County Central Commodores hosted the Sheldon Clark Cardinals in high school football. The game was nip-and-tuck throughout, with the Commodores pulling off the late win.
Perry Central took the opening kickoff but fumbled away their opportunity. Sheldon Clark was able to capitalize on the miscue and scored on a short run (7-0).
The Commodores were able to make good on their next possession. After a short drive, Kegan Robinson bounced off several would-be tacklers for a 25-yard touchdown run. Dylan Wooton added the extra-point for the seven-all tie.
Perry Central picked up a fumble on the next Sheldon Clark drive, and quickly found the end zone. Austin Pray hit Tyler Fugate for a 31-yard score (Wooton kick), and the 14-7 lead.
Just before the quarter ended, the Cardinals went back to the end zone. This time on a 21-yard run. They went for the two-point conversion, giving them the 15-14 lead.
The Commodores started the second period with a touchdown. Darryl Beatty jumped over a defender to break the goal line. Robert McClain tacked on the two-point conversion on a pass from Austin Pray, giving Perry Central the 22-15 lead.
The next two scores belonged to Sheldon Clark. Tyler O’Conner scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the night. The first went for 15 yards and the second nine yards. The Cardinals tacked on the two-point conversion of both, giving them the 31-22 advantage.
The Commodores made it back to the end zone with less than two minutes on the clock. Austin Pray finished off a drive with a two-yard run. He then threw the conversion to Tyler Fugate, setting the score at 30-21 at the half.
The fireworks went quiet in the third period as neither team scored. Sheldon Clark broke the second half ice in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run. They collected the conversion to take the 39-30 lead.
Perry Central picked up the pace and scored a pair of touchdowns in a short time. The first was a 23-yard pass to Nathan Pray from Austin Pray, and the next a six-yard run by Austin Pray. Dylan Wooton added a kick, while Austin Pray ran in the conversion. The Commodores then held the 45-39 lead.
With time running out, Sheldon Clark came up with the go-ahead touchdown. The Cardinals picked up a 38-yard run, but missed the conversion, tying the game at 45.
For the second consecutive week, the Commodores picked up the winning touchdown in the waning moments. This time Austin Pray finished off a drive with a three-yard run. The extra point failed, setting the score at 51-45.
The Commodores were able to hold on for the win, giving them a 2-3 record on the season.
