The A. B. Combs Lady Bearcats and the R. W. Combs Lady Mustangs hit the floor at the John C. Combs arena on Thursday. On the line: the 8th grade county championship.
The Lady Bearcats held the advantage as they had won the previous meetings, but R. W. Combs came out of the gate fast and caught A. B. Combs off guard. The Lady Mustangs jumped out to the early lead and ended the first period with the 7-4 advantage.
The Lady Mustangs continued to hold the lead throughout the second period, with the Lady Bearcats chipping away at the deficit. With a couple of minutes left to play in the first half, A. B. Combs began to make their move. As the two teams headed to the locker room, the Lady Bearcats were in control 21-16.
Both teams came out of the locker room ready to play. They traded baskets throughout the third period, keeping A. B. Combs in the driver’s seat. With six minutes left to play, the Lady Bearcats were on top 29-25.
The Lady Bearcats kept the pressure high in the final period, but the Lady Mustangs were not ready to go away. Midway through the period, R. W. Combs was able to cut the lead to three points.
The Lady Bearcats were able to reach down deep and put together one final run to close out the game. A. B. Combs pulled away late to take the 41-30 win, and the title.
