LACKEY — One person was killed and another injured Monday during a collision in Knott County.

Troopers with the Kentucky State Police responded to the scene in the Lackey community at 4:20 p.m. following a call reporting a two-vehicle collision.

The crash happened when a pickup being operated by 89-year-old Nero Patton of Mousie apparently crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle operated by a man identified as James Smith, according to a KSP release.

Patton was not wearing a seat belt at the time and was ejected from the vehicle, police say. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County Coroner.

Smith was airlifted from the scene to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia, where he was in fair condition at last report.
