The first spot in the 8th grade county tournament finals would be decided by the game between the A.B. Combs Bearcats and the Willard Warhawks. The Bearcats would dominate this game from the opening tip as they punched the first ticket 53-20.
The Bearcats had difficulty dealing with the Warhawk pressure in the opening period, and finished with a scant 10-6 lead. However, A.B. Combs would pick up the pace in the second period, posting a dizzying 22 points. Willard would only muster five points in the frame, sending the Bearcats to the locker room with the 32-11 lead.
A. B. Combs came out of the break determined to put the clock in continuous motion. Near the end of the period, the feat was accomplished, allowing the Bearcats to go deep into their bench. They finished the period with the 47-15 advantage.
The fourth period saw both teams go down the bench and the game ended quietly. The Bearcats’ 53-20 win put them in the finals.
