Three Junior Girl Scouts from Hazard have started a drive to help US troops overseas.
Fifth-grader Hanna Collett and sixth-graders Autumn Cox and Eleni Karelis were working on their final project to earn their bronze award, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can receive, when they heard of a possible idea from another Girl Scout troop in California. That troop was working to collect movies for US soldiers stationed overseas, and it seemed like the perfect idea for Collett, Cox, and Karelis to take up and help with for their final project.
The Scouts have set up a collection box on the first floor of City Hall where anyone who would like to can drop off new or used movies “to bring a little joy to the challenging life of our soldiers.” The girls said they hope to collect hundreds by Friday, March 15, when the box will be picked up so the movies can be shipped.
