The Perry County Central Lady Commodores took on the Letcher County Central Lady Cougars last week for a chance to play in the state tournament. The Lady Commodores led the entire game, with a late shot by the Lady Cougars giving them their only lead of the game.
Perry Central started strong, forcing Letcher Central into multiple turnovers. The Lady Commodores would get on the board first and slowly begin to add to their lead. At the horn, Perry Central held the 10-4 advantage.
Letcher Central began to find their groove in the second period and picked up their scoring. However, Perry Central would not falter on their end of the floor. At the intermission, the Lady Commodores were still on top 20-12.
The Lady Commodores went ice cold in the third period, but continued to hold a strong defensive presence. With eight minutes left to play, Perry Central’s lead was just two points at 24-22.
Perry Central opened the fourth quarter strong, and pushed their lead to 32-24 with 5:30 remaining. Letcher Central cut the lead to four (34-30) in less than a minute, leaving the Lady Commodores looking for a way to stop the bleeding.
With two minutes left to play, the Lady Cougars tied the game at 36 (the only other tie was at 2-all). The Lady Commodores then went up 40-36, however, it would be Perry Central’s last points.
With 11 seconds on the clock, Letcher Central hit a “3” out of the corner, giving them their first lead at 41-40. Perry Central got a couple of shots off before the horn, but both came up short of the mark. Letcher Central went on to win the game by the final count of 41-40.
