Elizabeth Snyder Duncan, 86, of Hazard, passed away Thursday, April 11 at Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. Dana Synder and the late Georgia Sewell Synder, and wasalso preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Joe W. Duncan.
She is survived by sons Bruce Duncan and wife Carolyn of Lexington, and Dana Joe Duncan of Hazard; and special aunt Jean Bianchi of Somerset.
Together with her husband, Joe, they owned and operated Hazard Rexall Drug of Main Street for 36 years until the store closed in 1989. In 1969, she was elected to the city commission, becoming the first woman elected to public office in the city of Hazard. She served on the commission until the end of 1996, including several terms as mayor pro tem.
Duncan was a graduate of Hazard High School and Centre College. She went on to play a significant role in the history of her native Hazard. She was commissioner during the expansion of the Hazard ARH and the transformation of Jacklot Hollow into the Black Gold Shopping Center. She was proud of being an advocate for the city work force. She was named woman of the year during the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Civic Night in 1974.
During the late 1940s, she was a regular on WKIC radio in Hazard and performed a live musical program from her house every Sunday morning at 9 a.m. She was a member of Hazard First Baptist Church where she also served as the church’s organist. Prior to that she served as organist at the Bowman Memorial Methodist Church. In later years she enjoyed attending church with Joe at the Mother of Good Council Catholic Church.
Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard, where the services were held on Monday, April 15 with Rev. Ron Sholar and Father Mike Chowning officiating. Burial followed in the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Ky.
