Nelson Fugate, 93, died Wednesday, May 1 at his residence in Austin, In.
He was born on Jan. 12, 1920 in Yerkes, the son of the late Green Fugate and Catherine Fugate. He was the founder, pastor, and member of the Scottsburg Church of God in Scottsburg, In. He was a retired millwright for the old American Can Company in Austin, and also a former coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cassie Fugate, whom he married on Sept. 6, 1941.
He is survived by his sons, Rev. Sonny Fugate and wife Wanda of Austin, and Rickey Nelson Fugate and wife Diana of Shelbyville, In.; daughters Saundra Adams and husband Vadus of Austin, and Sharron Susnick and husband Bud of Fresno, Ca.; brother Nathaniel Fugate and wife Anna of Dahlonega, Ga.; grandchildren Melissa Heard, Kevin Fugate, Charity Brown, Kristi Merritt, and Monica Gollar; great-grandchildren Aaron Fugate, Katie and Kaddisy Heard, Abigail and Allison Brown, Christian Foster, Harper Gollar, and Jesse Merritt.
Arrangements are being handled by Collins Funeral Home of Scottsburg, where the visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 6. Visitation will continued at 11 a.m., with services beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 at the Scottsburg Church of God.
