The Hazard-Perry 13- and 14 year-old all-stars opened their bid for the state title this past week. The team had a tough road getting to the big dance as they opened district play with a loss to North Laurel.
After falling to North Laurel, Hazard-Perry defeated Corbin, putting them in a rematch with North Laurel, a team they had to defeat twice to make it to state play.
Hazard-Perry blanked North Laurel in the first game behind a no-hitter from Devin Morris. They then advanced with a 9-2 win in the championship game.
In the first game of the state tournament, Hazard-Perry took on Lewis County. Hazard-Perry jumped out to the early lead and never looked back.
Hazard-Perry took the 2-0 lead in the first inning, and then went up 3-0 in the second inning. Lewis County took a single run off the total in the bottom of the second (3-1).
Hazard-Perry’s big inning came in the fourth as they plated four runs to take the 7-1 lead. Hazard-Perry tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh inning, bringing their total to nine. Lewis County would only muster a single run in the sixth inning.
When the runs were tallied, Hazard-Perry came away with the 9-2 win. They would take on Richmond in the following game.
