The Perry County Central Commodores hosted district foe Whitley County Friday in their first district match-up of the year. The two teams traded touchdowns early, but after that it was all Commodores.

Perry Central’s first possession lasted but a handful of plays and ended with a touchdown. Tyler Fugate concluded the drive with a seven-yard run. The conversion failed, giving the Commodores the 6-0 lead.

Whitley County used their first possession to drive the length of the field on the ground. They finished with a 15-yard run by Luke Woods. They were able to get the extra point through, taking the 7-6 lead.

At that point, the Commodores would start to break open the game, scoring two more times in the first period.

The Commodores’ second score came on a 38-yard run by Nathan Pray (12-7). Perry Central then stopped Whitley County and took over on downs. Tyler Fugate gave the Commodores the 18-7 lead when he hauled in a Nathan Pray pass and ran 45 yards for the touchdown. John Toomer caught a pass from Seth Napier to boost the score to 20-7.

The second quarter saw five touchdowns, with four of them going to the Commodores. Perry Central scored the first two. John Toomer took a short pass and finished it off with a 35-yard run (26-7), and the second came on a 30-yard run by Devan Brewer (Michael Shepherd kicked the PAT), giving the Commodores the 34-7.

Whitley County broke the Commodore scoring string with a touchdown midway through the period. The Colonels finished off a drive with a one-yard run. They then added the conversion, bring the tally to 34-15.

With several minutes remaining in the half, Perry Central was able to put together two more scoring drives. The first came on a 29-yard Nathan Pray run (40-15), and the final a two-yard Tyler Fugate run. Again, Shepherd added the extra point, sending the Commodores to the locker room with the 46-15 advantage.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the third period. Perry Central scored first with a one-yard pass from Seth Napier to Nathan Pray (Shepherd extra point), putting the Commodores up 53-15 lead.

Whitley County countered with a nine-yard run. After the extra point, Perry Central’s lead was cut to 53-22.

The ensuing kickoff was the first play of the fourth quarter. The Colonels went for the onside kick. However, they forgot to load the ball side, and John Toomer picked up the kick and raced 59 yards untouched for the score. Tate Wyrick kicked the extra point (60-22).

With time running out in the game, the Commodores struck again. This time, Jordan Combs took the ball five yards around the defense for the score (Wyrick extra point). The score set the final score at 67-22.
