The R. W. Combs Lady Mustangs and the East Perry Lady Miners tangled for the 8th grade county championship on Saturday. The Lady Mustangs jumped out to the early lead, and never looked back as they cruised to the 46-21 win.
The Lady Mustangs set the tone early as they opened the game with a pair of threes. The Lady Miners would not be able to keep pace as the R. W. Combs defense kept them at bay. At the end of the first period, the Lady Mustangs held a double-digit lead at 14-4.
The Lady Miners began to break the Lady Mustang pressure in the second period, and picked up some easy points under the basket. However, R. W. Combs would put on a late charge and tacked a couple of points onto their lead. At the break, the Lady Mustangs were on top 26-12.
Scoring dropped off considerably in the third quarter, but once again, it was R. W. Combs with the advantage in the period. With just six minutes left to play, East Perry had to find a way to make up a 16-point deficit (36-18).
R. W. Combs came out strong in the fourth quarter and put the finishing touches on the game. The Lady Mustangs would go on to claim the game, and title, with the 46-21 win.
