The Hazard Police Department is organizing a toy and coat drive for families in need of assistance this holiday season.

Any time between now and Dec. 20 officers will be accepting unwrapped toys, coats, jackets, or non-perishable food items at the station, said HPD Captain Jason Duff.

The drive will take place in lieu of a shopping trip the department has planned for area children, Duff explained, for which enough funds simply weren’t available. The department had raised some money for the shopping effort through T-shirt sales, and Duff said that balance will be maintained until next year. He added the department will be working to supplement those funds in the coming months through additional fundraisers to ensure the department’s Santa With a Badge effort does take place in 2014.

“The funds just weren’t available for this year, but the money that was raised this year is going to be held over until next year,” Duff said.

Toys and other items being accepted for the drive can be dropped off at the station at any time during the day, Monday through Sunday. The Hazard Police Department is located at 800 High Street. Anyone wanting to know more about the drive can call 436-2222 for additional information.
