HAZARD — An open seat on the Perry County Board of Education has been filled.
Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday appointed Buckhorn resident Robin Gabbard to the board last month, according to a letter dated Nov. 22. Her appointment will fill a vacancy following the resignation of Charlene Miller, who resigned on July 30. Gabbard will represent schools in Chavies and Buckhorn.
Gabbard’s appointment will be contingent upon her resigning from the site-based decision making council at Buckhorn School. She said she has already tendered her resignation from the council, which will be effective on Friday. She will officially begin her duties as a school board member on Jan. 6, 2014.
“I believe that the Perry County Board of Education is on the right path,” Gabbard said, adding she received notification of her appointment on Saturday. “I believe we’ve made some really good decisions. I also think that the board of education has more support countywide from staff and administration, and that we’re making good strides as far as academic excellence is concerned, and I want to be a part of that.”
In addition to her service on the site-based council at Buckhorn, Gabbard has also been involved in the PTA at Buckhorn and recently completed the Governor’s Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership, giving her 56 hours of training in school leadership and advocacy. She will also undergo a round of required training for new school board members prior to taking a seat on the board next month.
“We’ve got some things that we have to do between now and Jan. 6 to get me ready to go,” she noted.
Gabbard’s appointment will have her serving on the board until the end of 2014. The race for school board in District 1 will be added to the 2014 general election, at which time voters will elect a candidate to fill the remaining two years of Miller’s former term on the board. Candidates have until Aug. 12, 2014 to file for that race.
