Several freshmen at Perry Central High School donated toys to the Hazard Police Department on Friday as part of the department’s Santa with a Badge program.

HPD Captain Jason Duff announced the program last month, in which the department accepted toys and other items until Dec. 20 to distribute to area families. Freshmen with PCC’s College and Career Readiness course, which is a part of the school’s Gear Up program, responded to the department’s request and began gathering toys to donate.

David Jones, a teacher at the school, said the effort was part of a community service project the students undertake each semester.

“They had been working on it for about three weeks,” Jones said, adding the students will be taken to eat at Coal River Grille in Hazard after the holidays as a reward for their work.

Captain Duff, who along with Patrolman Tim Feltner accepted the donations at the school on Friday, said he expects the toys will be distributed to area families on Sunday and Monday.
