The Hazard Bulldogs and the Perry County Central Commodores hooked up in the championship game of the WYMT tournament. The two teams met earlier in the season with the Commodores taking the 54-52 win. The Bulldogs were missing center Chris Hudson in the first meeting, while the Commodores would be missing point-guard Braxton Beverly for this meeting.
Perry Central seemed to stay one-step ahead of Hazard in the first period, and ended the frame with the 14-12 lead. The Commodores continued to control the tempo in the second period, and went into the locker room with the 25-18 advantage.
Hazard came out of the half determined to get back in the game, and turned up the heat. The Bulldogs were only able to shave one point off their deficit, but did manage to control the tempo.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs decided to attack the Commodores weakness, the free throw line. Hazard’s exploitation of this weakness was good enough to earn them an overtime period to settle the matter.
The two teams battle back-and-forth in the overtime period and once again it would come down to free throws. The Bulldogs made good on their’s while the Commodores came up short. This allowed Hazard to unseat the reigning champs, and take the title back to Memorial Gym with the 54-52 win.
