New member takes seat on county school board
by Cris Ritchie — Editor
HAZARD – The newest member of the Perry County Board of Education attended his first board meeting on Friday, two days after taking the oath of office.
James Moscrip, a resident of the Happy community of Perry County, took a moment to introduce himself to the audience during the meeting, noting he is not at all unfamiliar with the school district.
“I worked in the Perry County school system for 28 and a half years in a lot of different capacities,” he said.
Moscrip worked as a science teacher, bus driver, and basketball coach, and in the last four years of his educational career served as the food service director for Perry County Schools. Following his retirement from central office, he worked several more years in the private sector for a natural gas company.
Moscrip was appointed to the board this month by Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday as a seat on the board was left vacant following James Ritchie’s resignation in late May. Ritchie left the board following a 3-2 vote in favor of hiring Jonathan Jett as the district’s new superintendent.
“I’m looking forward to serving, and I hope we can do everything in the best interest of all the students in Perry County,” Moscrip said. “I look forward to working with staff here and the other board members.”
