HAZARD—Eastern Kentuckians were visited on Saturday morning by U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell during his campaign’s kickoff of “Coal Country for Team Mitch,” where McConnell spoke on coal and his Democratic opponent for the 2014 election.
“We need to send a message that the depression in Eastern Kentucky needs to come to an end,” McConnell said while speaking at Whayne Supply in Hazard.
McConnell is seeking his sixth term as a U.S. Senator this year, and will be challenged in the May primary by Matt Bevin. Democrat Alison Lundergan grimes is the front-runner on her party’s ticket, and has been trading some campaign commercials with McConnell since she announced her candidacy.
McConnell has continuously said Grimes will not support the coal industry if she is elected, and continued that message on Saturday.
“They support her because they believe, no matter what she may say between now and November that she will not support coal,” he said.
McConnell also visited Madisonville, in western Kentucky, over the weekend to continue his “Coal Country for Team Mitch” campaign.
