The Perry County Central Commodores began their defense of the 14th region soccer title last week as they started district play. Up first for the Commodores would be crosstown rival, the Hazard Bulldogs.

Both teams started the game strong, and it would take a while for the game’s first goal to be scored. Perry Central would find the net twice during the half, sending them into the intermission with the 2-0 lead.

There would be but one goal in the second half. The Commodores would not kick the goal, but they would collect the points. The Bulldogs misplayed a ball in the box, posting an own-score. However, it would put Perry Central up 3-0. Tyler Holland defended the goal well, getting the shutout.

“We executed the game plan well, and were able to get everyone into the game,” Perry Central Coach Andrew Lunsford commented after the game. “The win should get the players relaxed for the championship.”

Perry Central would take on the Letcher Central Cougars in the championship game, which would be a defensive struggle throughout. A lone goal proved to be the difference in the contest.

Defense was the name of the game early in the contest, something Lunsford imparted on his team.

“I told the boys they might get one or two good looks at the goal,” he said.

That look came late in the first half when Logan Spencer connected from 35 yards out.

Despite the frenzied pace of the second half, neither team would find the net (Tyler Holland collected his second shutout of the tournament). Perry Central would hold on for the 1-0 district win.

“This was our seventh district title, but the first in the 53rd district,” comment Lunsford after the game. He would later add, “The win will set us up with a better chance in the region tournament.”
