The Buckhorn Wildcats will return their entire team from last season, and will be looking to make their mark in the 54th district this season. The Wildcats will be looking to improve on last season’s 15-15 record.

“We would like to make it into the region tournament, and see how far we can go,” commented Coach John Noble.

Buckhorn’s future beyond the 2013-14 season looks bright as well, as the Wildcats will suit up only one senior this season (Richard Stidham). The Wildcats will have some experience to rely on, however, with six juniors (Dillon Cole, Caleb Estep, James Morris, Peyton Cooper, Ryan Noble and Jeff Young).

Noble will also have six sophomores (Connor Hoskins, Josh Crank, James Blair, Ryan Boggs, Thomas Stidham and Jonovan Stidham), and three freshmen (Shannon Blank, Daniel Hurley and Josh Noble).

Buckhorn will begin the season on the road at Owsley County, while their next two games will also be away, including the Wierwille Classic on Dec. 7 in Berea. The Wildcats will make their first home stand against Jackson City on Dec. 9.

When asked about the district, Coach Noble said noted Perry Central and Hazard as the top two teams, but added his team will be competing to grab another district title.

“Perry and Hazard have to be the favorites,” he said, “with Buckhorn and Leslie County trying to get back there.”

As far as the 14th Region goes, Noble said Knott Central, which returns the majority of last year’s team, has to be on top, but several more teams will be looking to make a serious challenge.

“Knott County will be the favorite until someone can beat them when it counts,” he said. “Knott, Perry, Cordia, and Hazard will all be there. Breathitt County will have to be considered a dark horse.”
