The Cordia Lions overcame a six-point deficit in the final minute of regulation to force an overtime period against Lexington Catholic on Saturday, eventually going on to take the 74-71 win.
Saturday’s match-up marked the first time the Knights had traveled to Cordia, and was a rematch from a game last season in which the Lions fell at Lexington Catholic by 35 points.
Cordia was down by two with only seconds left in regulation when freshman guard Austin Combs got an open look at a three from the corner. The shot missed, but the ball took a friendly bounce off the rim into the hands of senior guard Felix Frimpong, who tied the game and forced an overtime period on the put back.
Cordia took its first lead of the game in overtime, though Lexington Catholic was able to even the score at 71 with less than 30 seconds on the clock. Senior forward Fritz Lucien, however, put the Lions ahead for good with a shot from behind the arc, giving Cordia the 74-71 win.
Senior point guard Christen Cunningham led the Lions with 23 points on the night.
