On Thursday, the Perry County Central Commodores hosted the TECO Coal Commodore Classic. Their first game pitted them against the Lakota East Hawks from Ohio.
The game got off to a slow start, with neither team finding their range. However, as the period wore on, Perry Central began to pick up the pace, and ended the frame with the 12-6 lead.
Lakota East began to make a game of it in the second period, and eventually erased their deficit. The Commodores continued to struggle from the floor, and went into the locker room trailing 26-24.
Perry Central came out of the break on fire, and scored the first ten points of the half. Lakota East eventually found the goal, but could not keep pace. With eight minutes left to play, the Commodores were on top 46-39.
The Hawks opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, cutting the lead to 46-42. The Commodores promptly pushed the lead back to double-digits, and settled in for Lakota East’s final attack.
Perry Central would have to hit their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win. The Commodores went on to win the contest by the final count of 65-56.
Braxton Beverly and Justin Johnson both finished the game with a double-double.
