Donivan Lawson, an eighth grader at East Perry Elementary, has become the 2014 district wrestling champion. The 121 pound wrestler won last week’s district tournament held at Harrison County, and qualified for the upcoming region tournament.
Lawson was the top seed in the tournament, earning him a first-round bye. He then went into action in the second round, finishing with a pin over McCreary County’s Alex Bowen. The championship was then earned with a late pin over Mcabb’s Ethan Johnson.
Zachary Thomas, also an eighth grader at East Perry, earned a bid to the region tournament with a second place finish in the 130 pound division. Thomas scored a pin in the first round, but fell in the preceding round.
Corey Clemons, a fourth grader at East Perry, finished third in 75 pound division. Clemons fell in his first match, but came back strong for the pin in his second.
At 105 pounds, Braydon Thomas, a fourth grader at East Perry, won his first-round match, but fell in his second. Thomas came back in his third match to earn a third place finish.
Each of the above wrestlers earned a spot in the upcoming region tournament. Also participating in the event were Ethan Combs, a seventh grader at Willard, and Gabe Begley, a fifth grader at A. B. Combs. The top four medalists advanced to region, which includes the district from the Lexington area. The top four medalists in each of the four regions will advance to the state at Montgomery High school.
