HAZARD – A Perry County woman was indicted last week on multiple counts of child abuse and sex-related crimes.
Brenda K. Bales, 40, of Big Creek, is facing charges including first-degree sodomy and first-degree sexual abuse, along with five counts of first-degree criminal abuse.
According to the indictment, Bales was alleged to have engaged in “deviate sexual intercourse” with a juvenile less than 12 years of age between January 2008 and 2012, and subjecting the child to sexual contact on an ongoing basis.
Bales also is accused of abusing two other juveniles for several years while the children were in her custody. One of the children was noted as being between the ages of “birth to less than twelve years” from 2001 to 2008 while the abuse was alleged to have taken place. The second child is noted as being less than 12 years of age during the same time period.
The indictment notes Bales is accused of confining the children in a small attic without plumbing or electricity, and preventing them from attending school. Both were alleged to have been severely malnourished.
Bail was set at $75,000, plus home incarceration if Bales is able to post bond. She is set for arraignment in Perry Circuit Court on Sept. 26.
