WHITESBURG—The New Year started off rather violently in one Eastern Kentucky city after one man was stabbed and killed in Letcher County after leaving a New Year’s Eve party at a local bar.


Kentucky State Police responded to a call in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, that Michael Shane Hogg, 25, of Whitesburg, had been stabbed during an altercation involving five individuals on Hayes Street in Whitesburg after leaving the Streetside Grill & Bar. Hogg was taken to the Whitesburg ARH where he was pronounced dead.


David Christopher Puckett, 23, of Jenkins, and 23-year-olf Stacy Phillips were also involved in the altercation. Puckett was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., and his condition is unknown at this time; Phillips was treated and released at the Whitesburg ARH.


The alleged attacker, James R. Huffman, 24, of Pikeville, was arrested and charged with one count of murder, and one count each of first- and second-degree assault. Patrick Smith, 27, of Marrowbone, Ky., was also arrested and charged with two counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, one count tampering with physical evidence, one count complicity to commit murder, and one count of first-degree criminal mischief. Both men are lodged at the Letcher County Detention Center, and the incident remains under investigation by Detective Joel Abner.
