HAZARD—After starting it 20 years ago, a group of men has finally published the story of their ancestors who fought in the Civil War for the Confederate Army.

This newly-released book is dedicated to the memory of Colonel Benjamin E. Caudill, a preacher from Letcher County, the men who followed him and their descendants.

The 13th Calvary, CSA or “Caudill’s Army” was mostly comprised of men from Southeastern Kentucky, with a few men from Virginia and Tennessee. The book contains a complete roster of the regiment and dozens of period and post-war photos of the soldiers.

The book is written by the Sons of the Confederacy Veteran’s (SCV) group based in Whitesburg. This is the first book written about this unit and comprises over 20 years of research.

“This is the only book about this regiment period,” Manton Cornett, a member of the SCV, said.

Stories about individual soldiers also make up the book.

“Some of these men were captured and taken to Camp Douglas in Chicago and at that point they were given a chance to leave prison and become sailors for the US Navy,” Manton said.

One of these naval recruits, a Breathitt County man by the name of Daniel Noble was on a US Navy ship during the Battle of Mobile Bay. Noble was involved in a rescue of the men from the USS Tecumseh which earned him the Medal of Honor.

The SCV marked Noble’s grave with both a Confederate Stone and a Medal of Honor stone.

“He’s (Noble) probably the only person that ever existed who has both honors,” Cornett said.
