The month of September means the opening of the fall festival season in Eastern Kentucky, and that includes Perry County.

The annual Black Gold Festival is set to kick off in downtown Hazard on Thursday, Sept. 19 and run through Saturday, Sept. 21. This year’s theme is “Black Gold Festival Salutes a Winning Mountain Tradition,” which celebrates the accomplishments of the county’s local schools, past and present. As usual, many wonderful food and craft tents will soon line Main Street with just about anything and everything you could imagine.

There’s still time to be a vendor at the festival. If interested, you can contact Teresa Chandler vie email at chandlerteresa@yahoo.com, or by telephone at 438-0837 for food booths, commercial and public service booths, and fun land. For a craft booth, please contact Anita Noble at rebel13heart@yahoo.com or 438-3990. You can also call the Black Gold Office and leave a message at 436-0161, and download craft booth and parade applications online at www.blackgoldfestival.com.

The Black Gold Committee is looking for past state championship teams from Hazard, Perry Central, Buckhorn, Dilce Combs, and M.C. Napier that would be interested in being in this year’s parade. Anyone interested can contact Angie Duff at perrycountytoursim@yahoo.com or 487-1580 for more information.

The entertainment line up is sure to have something for everyone, as well. Thursday night is Youth Night and features Kevin Wilson at 8 p.m. with local groups Summit at 7 p.m., 4ToGo at 6 p.m., and Taking Up Crosses at 5 p.m. On Friday night, Harken will perform at 6 p.m., Hannah Ellis at 7 p.m. and Borrowed Blue at 8 p.m. Saturday night’s headliner is Black Stone Cherry at 8 p.m., with Midlife Crisis at 7 p.m. All music is free and will be at the amphitheater next to City Hall in downtown Hazard.

For a full entertainment schedule and more you can visit the festival’s website at www.blackgoldfestival.com.
