Only two rooms at Big Creek were completely cleaned Wednesday afternoon. Noble said he thought it would take at least the rest of the week to finish the cleanup.
Head custodian at Chavies Elementary Carl Fred Noble worked with another Chavies custodial volunteer, Jerry Campbell, on Wednesday to disinfect the kitchen and bathrooms at Big Creek. Noble said he had not imagined the amount of mud and water he encountered when he began working Wednesday morning.
Big Creek Principal Jeff Castle said the damage was not as extensive as it could have been had more water entered the school. He said administrators are waiting for an insurance assessment to be completed for final numbers, however the only damage so far has been to floors and some books that were on lower shelves in some classrooms.
Volunteers with the Perry County School District spent Wednesday morning and most of the afternoon cleaning up the school after flash floods Monday night left several inches of water and mud in the facility.
