It was standing room only Friday at the John C. Combs Arena. There were two games slated for the Mountain Classic, but most in attendance were there to watch the Perry County Central Commodores and the Hazard Bulldogs. The last meeting between the teams was a 2011 district tournament win by the Commodores.

The game started slowly, with neither team scoring in the first few minutes. The Commodores’ Austin Pray kicked off the scoring, followed by a Bulldog basket by Collier Mobelini. Perry Central then went on a run that netted them an early double-digit lead. Hazard finished with a couple of baskets to bring the first period tally to 18-9 in favor of the Commodores.

The Commodores slowed down a little in the second period, but still managed to stay one-step ahead of the Bulldogs. A late burst by Perry Central sent them into the locker room with the 33-18.

Early in the third period, both Commodore big men, Justin Johnson and Dalton Cornett, went to the bench with foul troubles, opening a door for a Bulldog run. However, this only allowed Hazard to shave two points off their deficit (46-33).

The Commodores opened the fourth quarter with a pair of baskets, and eventually pushed the margin to 21 points. The Bulldogs would make a strong effort to put together a rally, but would not be able to cut the deficit lower than 15 points. Perry Central would finish off the game with a rally, giving them the 65-46 win.

Perry Central (65) Austin Pray 8, Tyler Fugate 7, Braxton Beverly 28, Jessie Roark 2 and Dalton Cornett 20.

Hazard (46) Matt Thompson 6, Hunter Hardy 4, Collier Mobelini 4, Evan Whitaker 2, Chris Hudson 13, Jordan Olinger 6, Tyler Triplett 5, and Jarrod Combs 6.
