HAZARD — A Perry County man was arrested last week and charged in connection with intentionally starting a forest fire.

Crews with the Kentucky Division of Forestry on Thursday, Oct. 25 were on the scene of a separate fire in Scuddy when they reported to police that a man, later identified as 32-year-old Carew “Shorty” Blankenship, was observed nearby starting a new fire.

Troopers with the Kentucky State Police responded to the scene, and after a short search located Blankenship, who was later positively identified by a supervisor with the Kentucky Division of Forestry as being the same man observed starting the fire.

Trooper Isaac Whitaker placed Blankenship under arrest, charging him with 25 counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. He was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard.
