HAZARD – The Perry County Board of Education did not take a vote on the contract of Superintendent John Paul Amis during its regular meeting on Thursday, but one official says to expect a vote within a week’s time.

Earlier this month the board issued notice for a special called meeting, with the possible termination of Amis’s contract being the sole business item on the agenda. The meeting was cancelled the following day due to a technical issue, according Board Chairman John C. Combs, though he did not elaborate.

The board did meet on Thursday following two weeks of speculation that its members would take a vote on Amis’s contract at the regular meeting this week, despite the contract issue being absent from the agenda. After taking action on several business items relating to construction and finance issues, the board met for a brief closed session, but quickly adjourned once the regular meeting resumed and took no further action.

Combs commented following the meeting that attorneys are evaluating the contract issue, and he expects the board to meet for a special called meeting within the next seven days, during which they will vote whether or not to terminate Amis’s contract.

“I think this is coming to a point where it will be taken care of this week,” he said.
