HAZARD — Chad Warrix and WYMT-TV in Hazard will host a telethon next week to raise money for those affected by last week's tornadoes.
Janet Smith, who coordinates the Halfway to Hazard Charity Concert at Crockettsville, said in a community meeting on Monday that she had been in contact with Warrix and they were working on a way to raise money.
“Chad Warrix of Halfway to Hazard contacted me Saturday, and he was wanting to do something,” said Smith.
Smith said that they then contacted WYMT and began working out a deal to help these victims. They setteled on a telethon, the proceeds of which will benefit the state’s storm victims.
This is not the first time that WYMT has hosted a telethon to benefit Eastern Kentucky disaster victims. The last time was just a couple years ago as a response to flooding.
“I think during the Breathitt County flooding a few years ago that they raised $57,000 through the telethon,” said Smith, “So I think we can really raise a lot of money.”
The telethon will be held on Tuesday, March 13, from 4 to 7:30. All of the money will go into a fund called the East Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund. Money that is donated can be set aside for a specific county or put in to the general fund.
For those who cannot, or chose not to call but still wish to donate, the money can be sent to the Foundation of Appalachian Kentucky who are in charge of this fund. Their address is:
P.O. Box 310
Chavies, KY 41727
It is being suggested by the organizers that business owners make the donations and challenge to help encourage employees to donate.
