The Hazard Lady Bulldogs and the Leslie County Lady Eagles kicked off the 2013 54th district tournament last week. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to the early lead, and were able to maintain the advantage until the closing moments of the contest.
The Lady Bulldogs were on top of their game in the first period, connecting from all over the floor. Hazard also held the momentum on the defensive side of the court, finishing the first period with the 18-11 advantage.
Hazard cooled off a little in the second period, but still managed to keep a firm grip on the lead. At one point the Lady Bulldogs pushed the margin to double-digits, but went into the locker room with the eight-point advantage (29-21).
The momentum shifted to the Lady Eagles in the third period, and the Lady Bulldogs’ lead began to melt away. A late basket by Leslie County sent them into the final eight minutes of play with the 38-36 lead.
At the midway point of the fourth quarter, the game was knotted at 39. Over the next couple of minutes, Hazard took control and forged a 43-39 lead.
Leslie County would later take the 44-43 lead. Hazard would match the basket, and with 12 seconds remaining held the 45-44 advantage.
The Lady Eagles forced the ball into the paint, and went to the line for a pair of free throws. After Leslie County made the free throws (46-45), Hazard had one more attempt to win the game. However, a turnover squashed the chance, and the Lady Eagles survived to play in the championship game.
