The Hazard Bulldogs hosted the Clintwood, Virginia Greenwave in a battle of Class A state champions Friday evening. Clintwood took the early lead, but could not hold off a determined Bulldog team.

The Bulldogs got on the board first. Hazard was able to march the ball down field, but could not punch it into the end zone. They had to settle for a 34-yard field goal off the foot of Kevin Eversole (3-0).

On the ensuing drive, Clintwood faired no better. The Greenwave, too, had to settle for a 30-yard field goal to tie the game (3-3).

In the second period, Clintwood hit for back-to-back touchdowns. The first came on a five-yard run, and the second on a six-yard run. The scores gave the Greenwave the 17-3 advantage.

Hazard picked up a touchdown just before the half as Evan Whitaker found Jordan Olinger on a 16-yard route that ended in the end zone. Kevin Eversole added the extra point to bring the tally to 10-17 going into the break.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the third period after a long sustained drive. Brandon Jones finished off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run (17-17).

With time running out in the game, the Bulldogs took the lead. Austin Johnson set up the touchdown after taking a pass at the line of scrimmage, and breaking a tackle for a 57-yard run. Evan Whitaker concluded the drive with a one-yard run. The failed conversion set the tally at 23-17.

Hazard was able to stymie Clintwood’s final drive, and collect the win.
