HAZARD – Members of First Baptist Church of Town Mountain will recognize the church’s 120th anniversary with a special celebration this coming weekend.
The church, located at the top of Town Mountain just above Hazard on Highway 451, was established in 1892 by a small group of families whose first service was held in a local house. During the warm season, services were held outside, though in 1894 a plot of land was donated near the Blue Grass Mining Camp where the first church was built. The congregation later moved to a site on Town Mountain.
Several pastors have served the congregation since its founding, including Rev. Eli Yates, Rev. T.K. Finley and Rev. John B. Nurse. The church’s current pastor is Rev. John Pray, who has served as pastor since 1980.
The church’s 120th anniversary celebration will be held on Sunday, August 26, with guest speaker Rev. Lowell D. Parker and the congregation of Consolidated Baptist Church of Hazard. The morning service will begin at 11 a.m. and the evening service will begin at 3 p.m.
Church members say everyone is invited.
