HAZARD – Authorities in Perry County are investigating a break-in and theft that occurred at a local restaurant early this week.
Officers with the Hazard Police Department responded to the Ponderosa on Morton Blvd. at 5:30 a.m. on May 21 after the assistant manager reported a burglary at the business.
It appeared that the business’s front door had been pried open, noted HPD Captain Jason Duff, which allowed two perpetrators to enter the restaurant. Duff added that the burglars also worked to cover their tracks.
“The alarm systems had been disabled, and the camera system had been messed around with,” Duff said, noting that they cut the phone lines and ripped the audible alarm from the ceiling. There is, however, surveillance video captured earlier that morning that shows two people dressed in black clothing inside the restaurant. Their faces are obscured with makeshift masks.
While inside the business, the thieves stole a floor safe that held approximately $3,000.
No arrests have been made in the theft, and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Hazard Police Department at 606-436-2222.
