HAZARD — A new Perry County elementary school has been under construction for just a few months, but already significant progress can be seen, and officials say work is ahead of schedule.
The new East Perry Elementary School is going up near the Daniel Boone Shopping Center on Highway 80, and is starting to take shape with several visible walls in place. The school can be seen from the highway, and within just a few short weeks a shape has begun to emerge for the former strip mining site.
Perry County Schools Superintendent John Paul Amis said that he is happy with the progress, and that the project in now expected to be finished well ahead of schedule.
“They are running ahead of schedule and they are not projected to finish until September of 2013,” Amis said. “Right now they are now shooting for having all construction finished by May of 2013.”
Amis said that he visited at the construction site several times over the last week and that it is difficult to say exactly what phase of the construction they are in, but they have been continuing to work quickly and are well on track to finish early.
“It is safe to say they are ahead of schedule,” he said.
The school’s contractor, D.W. Wilburn, has done work for Perry County Schools in the past. They did several phases of the renovation at Buckhorn School that was completed in 2011. Amis had said in a past board meeting when the district decided on the contractor, that they had done good work at Buckhorn and that he felt very comfortable working with them again.
As the school progresses, Amis said that it makes him proud to see the school come together.
“The people that drive by can see the progress that is being made, and a lot of people drive by and are seeing that and make comments about it,” said Amis. “Everybody is excited about it.”
The East Perry Elementary School is being built to replace Dennis C. Wooton Elementary School, and is scheduled to be open for the 2013-2014 school year.
