Hazard High School’s Band of Gold placed second in the state Saturday at the state competition in Bowling Green.
Hazard High School’s Band of Gold, which is no stranger to success, placed second Saturday evening at the state band competition, and were given a hearty welcome upon their return to Hazard the following day.
The state band competition was held on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, and Hazard’s Band of Gold was the smallest band in the competition, vying for the Class A title against Beechwood High School. Though Beechwood took home the title, Hazard’s second place finish was more than impressive considering that Beechwood fielded more than 100 band members.
The Band of Gold under director Pauletta Smith has won multiple state titles and other competitions, and this season had already gathered some hardware. On Sept. 29 they traveled to Corbin for the Cumberland Falls Marching Invitational for their first competition this season, placing first in percussion and first overall in Class A, and being named grand champions over 11 other bands.
The band traveled to Pulaski County the next week for the Pulaski County Invitational, placing first in color guard and first in percussion, and first overall in Class A. They proceed to overall finals, placing third out of 10 bands.
The band then competed in Russell High School’s Marching Band Festival, placing first in color guard, first in percussion and first overall for Class A. The band also took home the grand champion honor.
Their next competition saw the band traveling to Madison Southern on Oct. 20, where they came in third with a distinguished before heading into state semifinals at Bowling Green this past weekend.
