HAZARD — Motorists may notice an increase in police patrol cars in the coming weeks thanks to the Click It or Ticket 2013 Traffic Safety Campaign. Local law enforcement officials gathered at the Perry County Public Library on Thursday to kick off the campaign.

The campaign is meant to remind citizens of the importance of wearing a safety belt while driving, and also of having any minors in the appropriate child restraints, whether that is a car seat, booster seat, or just a seat belt. According to law enforcement officials at the kickoff, 83 percent of Kentuckians wear their seat belts while driving, however, only 60 percent of Perry Countians do.

Bob Criswell, law enforcement liaison with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, said he hopes officials can close the gap between those numbers with the help of the campaign, which will run from May 20 to June 2.

Criswell said so far this year there have been 190 vehicular accident related fatalities. While this number may seem high it is an improvement from this time last year when there were 268 deaths already.

“The reason for that drop, a lot of that’s due to the work of these law enforcement officers and this campaign,” Criswell said.
