HAZARD — A local woman was reportedly robbed of her car and more than $17,000 after stopping for another woman who jumped into the path of her vehicle.

Police say the theft took place on April 4 as Christianna Clemons, an employee of UBet, was taking a deposit from the business on Dawhare Drive to a local bank when a woman and two men stopped her near Reno’s Roadhouse. Clemons said in a statement to the Hazard Police Department that the woman jumped into the road and told her to stop.

Clemons told police that if she had not stopped she would have been forced to hit the woman. At that time, the woman came around the car and assaulted Clemons and forced her from her car. Clemons suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment, according to Captain Jason Duff with the Hazard Police Department.

The subjects reportedly fled in the vehicle, while Clemons walked to Reno’s where police were called.

Authorities began looking for Clemons’ 2001 maroon Pontiac Grand Am that she had only purchased a few weeks prior, and Captain Duff noted that witnesses saw the carjackers standing on the hill, but none of them were stopped.

“Three witnesses saw them standing in the location where this happened at,” said Duff, adding that police are not yet sure if that means they had been waiting for Clemons’ car in particular, though he admitted it was suspicious. “Don’t know if they had been watching her, don’t know if it was just a random act or what.”

Police are currently investigating the crime as a robbery and are looking for help from the public to find those involved. The female perpetrator is described as having a stocky build with shoulder length dark hair that is flipped out at the ends. One of the males was described as around 5’6” or 5’7” with black wavy hair, possibly of Hispanic descent. There was no description given for the third subject.

The victim said she had never seen the perpetrators before, and they were not wearing masks. Police were able to find video of them walking up the hill, however, they were not able to identify them from this video.
