The Perry County Central Lady Commodores took on the Leslie County Eagles Thursday in the championship game of the 54th district. The Lady Commodores took control of the game early, but had to withstand a Lady Eagle barrage in the fourth quarter to take the win.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first period, with Perry Central inching away near the end. The Lady Commodores were able to end the opening frame with the 15-10 lead.

Perry Central picked up the pace in the second quarter, and quickly posted the double-digit lead. They finished the quarter strong, and went into the locker room with the 29-16 advantage.

Leslie County picked up the pace early in the third period, and cut away a major chuck of the Perry Central lead. The second half of the period belonged to the Lady Commodores, and the quarter ended in a tie, sending Perry Central into the final period with a 46-33 lead.

The early minutes of the fourth quarter looked as if Perry Central was going to cruise to the win. However, at the midway point, they went cold from the floor, opening the door for a Lady Eagle run.

Leslie County began to pour in the threes while Perry Central was struggling to make a basket.

With less than a minute remaining, Leslie County had the lead down to two points (59-57) and had the ball. Perry Central came up with a big defensive stand, and was put on the free throw line. The Lady Commodores made one free throw (60-57), leaving the Lady Eagles with a final shot.

Leslie County had 16 seconds to tie the game, and keep their title hopes alive. The Lady Eagles struggled to get a good shot, and the effort fell just short of the mark, giving Perry Central the win.

Perry Central (60) Kayla Rankin 29, Whitney Back 18, Randi Carol Napier 5, Whitney Evans 3, Lyndci Combs 3 and Perri Coots 2.

Leslie Co. (57) Katelyn Fee 2, Kacey Stidham 17, Brooke Asher 6, Tori McIntosh 13, Katie Moore 15 and Tori Boggs 4.
