The Perry County Central Commodores hooked up with the Cordia Lions Friday for the second time in as many weeks. The game was close throughout, and came down to the final shot to decide who would move on.

The two teams traded baskets to start the game, with Perry Central then moving into a small lead. Cordia hit a three late, bringing the first period tally to 10-5 in favor of the Commodores.

The Commodores opened the second period strong, and pushed the lead to 16-5. However, the Lions refused to go away and came roaring back, cutting the lead to four (16-12). At that point, the two teams began trading baskets. Perry Central went into the break with the 30-26 advantage.

Perry Central flexed their muscles again in the third period, pushing the margin back to double digits. This left Cordia needing to make up 14 points (49-35) in the final period.

The Lions came out strong in the fourth quarter, and began to cut into the lead, but once again, the Commodores were able to counter. Perry Central had the lead back to 12 points when Braxton Beverly had his eye cut on a lay-up attempt, sending him to the locker room.

Cordia took advantage of the situation, and went to the full court press. The Lions quickly began to cut away at the lead. Beverly soon returned, but was not up to full speed. However, he was able to stem the Cordia press, and help the Commodores get to the free throw line.

With only seconds remaining, the lead was down to one point (58-57), and Perry Central was on the line. The Commodores missed the second free throw (59-57), giving the Lions one more shot.

Cordia ran the clock down, and got off the final shot. Perry Central’s Darryl Beatty got a hand on the shot, causing it to fall just shy. The Lions got a final tip, but it too fell short, giving the Commodores the 59-57 win.

Perry Central (59) Austin Pray 3 (1 rebound), Darryl Beatty 5 (3 rebound, 1 block, 4 assists and 2 steals), Tyler Fugate 2 (1 rebound and 1 assist), Braxton Beverly 22 (1 rebound, 2 assists and 3 steals), Dalton Cornett 11 (13 rebounds and 3 blocks), and Justin Johnson 16 (12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal).

Cordia (57) Emmanuel Owootoah 12 (4 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals), Marlon King 16 (4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal), Anthony Tagaloa 11 (5 rebounds, 1 anssist and 2 steals), Ajenee Chisolm 7 (2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block), Dondre Warren 7 (11 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal), Matt Neace 2 (3 rebounds and 3 steals), and Braxton Tackett 2.
