The Perry County Central Commodores kicked off their 2012 football season on Friday with a trip to Prestonsburg to take on the Blackcats. Last season’s matchup came down to the final play, with the Commodores coming away with the win.
Perry Central opened the game with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter. Austin Pray got things started with a 53-yard run, and Darryl Beatty followed that with a 17-yard run. The pair of touchdown runs gave the Commodores the 12-0 lead as both extra-point attempts failed.
Prestonsburg cut the lead to five in the second half as Bryson Williams ran into the end zone from five yards out. Jay Smith added the extra point to bring the tally to 12-7.
Just before the half, the Commodores got the touchdown back with a nine-yard Kegan Robinson run. Again, the extra point attempt failed, sending Perry Central into the locker room with the 18-7 advantage.
The two teams traded scores in the third period. Prestonsburg’s Grant Anderson hauled in a pass from Jarred Jarrell, bringing the score to 18-13. Perry Central countered with a 10-yard run by Austin Pray (his second of the game). The score pushed the lead to 24-13.
The Commodores went cold in the fourth quarter, while the Blackcats picked up the pace. Prestonsburg scored twice in the waning moments. The first a Bryson Williams nine-yard run, and the second on a three-yard Jarred Jarrell run.
The two scores put Prestonsburg up 27-24 with only 58 seconds remaining. Perry Central was unable to get anything going in the final minute, and came away with a loss in their first game.
