As excitement builds in Perry County for the 2012 Black Gold Festival, one up-and-coming Kentucky-based band is preparing to open for one of their musical heroes.

Borrowed Blue was formed just over a year ago by four guys from the Lake Cumberland area. Since then they have found themselves moving quickly, recording music and preforming shows. Lately they have been engaged in a media tour, getting the word out about their new single, “Porch People,” which they will be debuting on the radio just days before the Black Gold Festival.

Matt Cooper, Brandon Davis, Jordan Latham and Jay Gregory make up the band, and they are hoping to kick off a new Kentucky music resurgence. “There are a lot of bands coming up from Georgia, Arkansas, places like that, and we think it is about time for a new band out of Kentucky,” said Cooper during a recent stop at the Herald’s office.

In past years, bands like Montgomery Gentry, the Judds and The Kentucky Headhunters have had major hits, though there have been few new bands break into country music in a big way. The boys of Borrowed Blue said they are looking at these bands as inspiration as they try to make big waves in country music.

“The Kentucky Headhunters, we grew up listening to them and they are one of our favorite bands in Kentucky,” said Davis. “They are home grown in Kentucky, just like we are.”

The boys of Borrowed Blue added that they are excited to open for the Headhunters during the Black Gold Festival’s Friday evening entertainment. But they are also excited about releasing their new single.

“Porch People” was written by Eric Heatherly, known for his cover of “Flowers on the Wall” by the Statler Brothers that made it to No. 6 on the Billboard country singles charts in 2000. Cooper said that when they heard the song they knew it was for them.

“We just thought that it was for us,” he said. “It is about where we come from.”

The band performed the song at an event in Nashville for the 2012 CMT Music Festival. Part of that performance became footage for their music video. For their performance at the Black Gold Festival they said they hope everyone comes away with a moment that sticks with them.

“We are just an in-your-face rocking kind of band,” Cooper added. “We are going to have at least one moment during the show that you are going to remember. It might be many, you never know.”

Davis said that he is looking forward to coming to the Black Gold Festival, especially since he has been before by helping with producing some of the musical performances in the past. “I was working it because my dad had owned a concert production company,” said Davis. “I remember saying it was a great festival, a lot of great action. There are a lot of great people over there.”

Borrowed Blue will be playing Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. You can see their video for “Porch People” on their website, www.BorrowedBlueMucis.com.
