Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,There has been so much talk lately about what will save Hazard and Appalachia. It needs new leadership, better schools, more businesses, better infrastructure, more jobs, more industry, etc. The list is endless. Unfortunately, one of the things that is most often said in these conversations is something along the lines of, “I have watched this area decline for years, I hope and pray it gets better, but if it doesn’t I will have to leave to make a better life...

The struggle is here, not on Mars

For the last week and a half, news from Southeastern Kentucky has spread like wildfire, it seems, across the nation. No, it hasn’t been about the work being done on the SOAR initiative to help improve the region, nor has it been about the promise zone grants that are being applied for and received almost daily in each county in the region. It’s been a little other-worldly, actually.During a National Resources and Environment Committee meeting on Thursday, July 3, State ...

An entrepreneurial eco-system is emerging in East Kentucky

In May 2004, I left the full-time practice of law and began working for the Kentucky Innovation Network and Morehead State University in what seemed to be an obscure form of economic development. It was so obscure (and seemingly irrelevant) that its chief label was a French word: entrepreneurship. Hard to say, harder to spell — and French to boot! (This latter was no small albatross in an era when even French fries were coming under fire. You know Americans are angry when they start att...

Letter to the Editor

To whom it may concern,I am a proud native southerner who was raised in a working class household in rural east Tennessee. Over the years, I have continually been amazed and embarrassed by the statements and actions of politicians from the South, and your Senator Brandon Smith is continuing that trend. It is stunning, to the point of being beyond understanding, how Sen. Smith could make such an outright wrong assertion that “we all know” that the Earth and Mar...
