Family Dollar employee faces theft charges

HAZARD — Officials with the Hazard Police Department (HPD) rushed to the scene of a robbery Friday morning only to find that no such crime had actually occurred.Officer James East said an emergency call was received at 7:39 a.m. from an employee at Family Dollar, a store in the Hazard Village Shopping Center.The employee, Eric R. Pennington, 27, of Hyden, told police he had been robbed as he was taking a deposit to the bank. Pennington further reported that he had been hit over the head by a man wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans. The assailant then grabbed the bag of money and ran away, Pennington said.
