Both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams for Perry Central notched wins to open the 2013-14 regular season on Tuesday, with the Commodores taking on Breathitt County and the Lady Commodores facing Middlesboro inside the confines of the John C. Combs Arena.The boys’ team cruised to the 74-52 win, while the girls defeated the Lady Yellow Jackets by the final score of 65-43.The boys will hit the road for their next match-up as they will take on Henry Clay Friday at Tates Creek High School in the Mr. Basketball Classic. The Lady Dores will also play on Friday as they make a home stand against Somerset at 7:30 p.m.
This year marks the beginning of another biddy league basketball organization in the county. The Perry County Central Commodores made it to the second round of the state 5A playoffs this season, finishing with a 6-6 record. The Commodores took on some tough competition throughout the season, with the defense playing hard the whole way. The Hazard Bulldogs ended their quest for the Class A football title in the region championship game, and an 11-2 record. The Bulldogs scored 485 points (459 after forfeit by Fairview), with junior running back Brandon Jones accounting for 164 points. Freshman Tanner Morgan is credited with 18 points. The Hazard Bulldogs may not have realized their goal of playing in the state championship game, but they did, however, make it to the Class A region championship game. The Bulldogs were near the top in Class A in defense as they allowed but 263 points in 13 games (233 officially with the forfeit from Fairview). The stingy Hazard defense was led by senior Josh Meehan who accumulated 110 tackles on the season.
Obviously we know more about this extremely young UK men’s basketball team now that November is behind us, yet we still have a truck load more to learn. Roles and responsibilities are starting to form and John Calipari is about ready to draw a line in the sand with several players concerning breaking old habits. In the past Cal has won most of those battles with players, except for last year’s frustrating fiasco, but this is a new year with new players.
