To the Editor of the Hazard Herald:

We all have the freedom of speech. That is what is great about the USA.

Now in my opinion, I feel the Perry County school board could use some changes.

Number One - I feel we do need a different Superintendent. The reason being is why he was removed from Buckhorn! I do not feel a person like that should ever work with children. Number Two - I have children in school here also. I think the problem is not with three board members, the bottom line is it is a power struggle. There seems to be one member who wants to become chairman again. And that would be the big orange pumpkin. If you attend a school board meeting all you hear is, "I have been a board member for 35 years," WHO CARES.

I think it's time for every one to get along and make decisions based on the best interest of the children and employees of the BOE. There was a member who is running for office, Mr. Campbell who came to me and asked me to vote for him. I just listened to him complain, not one time did he say anything he wnated to do to improve the schools or help the children. All I was to hear was how bad the other candidate was. I am a regular and honest voter and I would not vote for him for two reasons (1) He had no base to run on, other than political power and (2) I am out of his district. I will cast my vote for Doc Spencer. He has leadership and seems to have the children and education on the top of his agenda.

Kenneth Hall may be tough to beat. Was he the one who won county-wide for surveyor? Oh! He was the only one running? Go figure, you can't lose that way.

I think that's the only way he could win for school board also. If Bruce Fields came off the ticket. Of course this is just our opinion.

God Bless you all. If you don't vote, you don't have the right to complain.

Let's Write To The Military

Several people in Perry County have been talking about a letter-writing campaign for our military personnel serving overseas. There are many young men and women from Perry County that are living a LONG way from the mountains.  Just think how much better they would feel if they received  letters of cheer or local news from their hometown.

You can help us to compile a mailing list for these young Americans.  If you have a father, brother, sister, spouse or friend  who is stationed outside the USA, please call us with their current mailing addresses.

You can phone that information in by calling

Alice J. Hall at 436-8840,

Yvonne Shaffer at 439-2652

or by mailing the names

and addresses to:

The Hazard Herald

548 Main Street

Hazard KY 41701.

And, of course, we also need a lot of letter-writers and donations to help with the postage.  You can help in this way, too. Just let us know.

We can encourage these Perry County sons and daughters with Lots of Letters From Home! You can help us  by phoning in those names.

Sincerely,

Alice Jane (Just call me A.J.) Hall
