The Perry County Central boys' soccer team started the 2006 season with a big win. The Commodores traveled to Whitesburg for the Letcher Central tournament and came away with the trophy.

The Commodores opened the event with the Johnson Central Golden Eagles. They did not have a particularly good start, and went into the break tied at zero (the tournament was played with 20 minute halves).

Perry Central began to heat up in the second half. Charles Turner was the first to find the net. Four minutes into the half, Turner was tripped in the box and received a penalty kick. The kick was good, giving the Commodores the 1-0 lead.

Midway through the period, Turner picked up his second goal. J. R. Lunsford and Zach Hall teamed up on a double-assist, cris-crossing the field to find Turner alone in the center of the box. He made good on the kick for the 2-0 lead.

The lead held as Justin Stacy stood the shutout for the Commodores. Perry Central advanced to meet the Letcher Central Cougars in the championship game.

Perry stats:

Charles Turner: 2 goals, Zach Hall: 1 assist and J.R. Lunsford: 1 assist.

The Commodores met the host Cougars of Letcher Central in the championship game. Perry Central picked up the first goal of the game early as a Charles Turner kick was knocked down by the Cougar goalie. J. R. Lunsford, however, found himself in great position for the rebound, and deposited the ball gently in the net (1-0). Letcher Central was able to tie the game just before the half, sending the two teams to the intermission knotted at one.

The Commodores controlled the action in the second half, keeping the ball on their side of the field most of the time. However, the Cougar goalie proved to be up to the task, ending the game still tied at one.

The conclusion of the game rested on a penalty kick shootout. The two teams traded goals on the first two (J. R. Lunsford and Josh Ray had the goals). The tide began to turn on the third kick. Zach Hall's kick was good giving the Commodores the advantage. Justin Stacy made a diving save to hold the score at 3-2.

Ross Baker upped the advantage to 4-2 with his goal, but Letcher quickly answered with their third goal. Perry Central opened the door for Letcher Central when Charles Turner's offering went over the post (4-3).

The outcome of the game weighed in the balance as the Cougars step in the box. The kick was on target, but Justin Stacy was able to change directions for a diving stop to preserve the win (4-3).
