HAZARD – Police in Hazard are following leads into the burglary of a clothing store in the Black Gold Shopping Center that occurred sometime overnight on Sunday.

Patrolman Zach Miller was called to Maurice’s at 8 a.m. Monday morning after a store employee reported that a front window in the business had been broken with a landscaping brick.

Miller said employees were at the store until 9 p.m. Sunday night, and the break-in happened sometime after they had locked up for the night. No merchandise was reported missing, but the thief apparently did get away with an amount of cash.

“As of right now, what we know was taken was $300 in cash,” Miller said.

Miller does have a surveillance video he is reviewing, though he noted that so far it has failed to provide a description of the perpetrator. He added, however, that the department has already received anonymous tips that he will be following up on as the investigation continues.

It is currently unclear if the break-in was perpetrated by more than one person, though Miller said it appeared from the hole used to make entry, the person would have had to be smaller in stature to avoid cuts from the broken glass.

The break-in is the first that Miller said he is aware of at the business, and noted that none of the surrounding businesses were touched.

Police are urging anyone who may have information regarding the break-in and theft to call the Hazard Police Department at 606-436-2222. Anonymous tips can also be made online at tips@hazardpd.org.
